Many Perth homeowners are shocked to learn that the dull, hazy patches on their shower glass aren’t just surface stains — they’re actual damage to the glass itself. This is commonly called “glass etching” or fondly called “glass cancer,” and once it reaches a certain point, no amount of cleaning will fix it.
What etching actually is
Etching is the microscopic pitting or erosion of the glass surface. Glass is made of silica, sodium, and calcium oxides. When mineral deposits (especially the alkaline calcium and magnesium layers) sit on the glass for a long time, they trigger a slow chemical reaction. Hydrogen ions from the water and minerals loosen the silicon-oxygen bonds in the glass, creating tiny pits. Sodium and calcium ions then move in and bond permanently. The glass literally starts dissolving from the top down.
The three stages of damage
Stage 1 – Surface build-up only White cloudy film that sits on top. This is fully removable with the right professional process.
Stage 2 – Early etching Minerals have started pitting the surface, but the damage is shallow. A skilled restoration using rotary polishing and high-grade compound can gently abrade away the damaged layer and restore clarity.
Stage 3 – Permanent deep etching The pits are too deep and the glass structure is permanently altered. No polishing can fix this, the upper surface can be made smooth but below the upper "flat" surface is glass that has now been roughed up — the only option is replacing the glass.
Why some glass etches faster
Again, quality matters hugely. Premium low-iron glass has a denser, more uniform structure with fewer weak points, so the etching process takes longer to start. Cheaper glass with higher impurities and a rougher surface gives the minerals an easier target, accelerating the damage. Leaving heavy mineral build-up for years is what turns a simple cleaning job into an expensive glass replacement.
The good news? Catching it early and applying a world-class protective nano-coating after restoration can stop the cycle completely — keeping your glass looking showroom-new for years which is exaclty what GlassGlow Restoration carries out.
